Ann “Nancy” Mann of Mohegan Lake, NY passed away peacefully on July 19, 2022 at the age of 94. She was born on June 26, 1928 in Brooklyn, NY. Ann recently celebrated her 94th birthday with family, friends and her favorite cake – strawberry shortcake.
Ann is survived by her daughter Nancy Sparta (Joe), her son William Mann (Mary), her granddaughters Victoria Kathleen Mann and Kaitlyn Kaminski-Sparta (Erin), and her favorite grandson Michael Sparta. She was predeceased by her husband Thomas F. Mann, her son Thomas Mann, Jr. and her brother James Seward.
Ann’s parents immigrated to America from Scotland. While growing up in Brooklyn, Ann was nicknamed Nancy by her closest friends who treated her as their sister. It is fitting to say that Ann was predeceased by her sisters Helen Dowd, Catherine Cook, Mazie Hemingway and Teresa Helstosky – a/k/a The Gallagher Sisters.
Ann married Thomas Mann on October 26, 1957 at Holy Cross Church in Brooklyn, NY. She worked as a secretary while her children were in elementary school. As her husband loved the beach, they later moved to Rockaway Beach, NY. While living there, Ann worked as a secretary at St. John’s Home For Boys. Several years after her husband passed away, her eldest son Thomas had an unfortunate swimming accident which resulted in his being a quadriplegic. Ann selflessly gave her up job and life in Rockaway to care for her son on Long Island. Shortly after her son’s passing, Ann moved to Mohegan Lake to be closer to her other children and grandchildren.
Ann was an active member of the Yorktown Senior Center. She always loved to dance and her use of a walker never stopped her from dancing. She was an independent woman who lived on her own until recently. Ann loved to shop, send cards for every occasion to everyone she knew, she loved Christmas and was recently discussing how it is now Christmas in July. Ann loved to sing Happy Birthday on the phone to those she was unable to be with on their birthdays. Lovingly, in turn, when Ann celebrated her birthday several weeks ago, she was flooded with calls from loved ones near and far signing happy birthday to her.
A few words that best describe Ann are loving, caring, kind, generous, sincere, trustworthy, positive, happy, outgoing and thoughtful. She was full of life, love and happiness. She was an inspiration to all who knew her. Ann had a smile that could light up a room and lift your spirits. She found the good in everyone and always saw the bright side.
All are welcome to attend a memorial visitation on Sunday, July 24th from 12-2 & 4-6 PM at the Joseph J. Smith Funeral Home in Mahopac, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, July 25th at 10 AM at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Shrub Oak, NY. Interment of Ashes will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Queens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in her name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
