Carmela “Lena” Spano of Mahopac, NY passed away peacefully on June 13, 2022 at the age of 96. She was born on September 1, 1925 in Tresilico, Italy; one of seven children of the late Alfonso and Pasqualina (neé Cundari) Gallo. On October 6, 1951 she married the late Pasquale “Pat” Spano at the Immaculate Conception Church in the Bronx. As a young woman, Carmela worked briefly as a seamstress but soon realized that being a wife and mother of 4 boys was her true calling.
Everyone loved Lena even those that weren’t related to her called her Nana Lena. She had an affinity for shoes and earrings. Always eyeing up everyone’s and asking where she could get them. She was the best cook, simple, delicious and plentiful food. Lots of meatballs. She called everyone a pain in the a** in the most loving way. She spoke her mind and everyone appreciated how candid she was. She was loving and kind and gentle and soft. Nana Lena will forever be in our hearts.
Lena is survived by her son Joseph and his wife Mary Anne, son Robert and his wife Lisa, son Steven and his wife Lucy; grandchildren Christopher, Summer, Nicole, Jonathan, Madyson, Matthew, Michael, and Olivia; great grandchildren Juliana, Luke, Christopher Jr., Gavin, Joseph, Jack, Daniella, Jonathan.
