Frank Battista, a lifelong resident of Mahopac, NY passed away on Sunday August 14, 2011. He was 91. Born on November 18, 1919 in Casalciprano, Italy the son of Carmine and Carmela Iapaola Battista, immigrating to the US at the age of 9.On July 15, 1947 he married Yolanda Lombardi at St. John the Evangelist Church in Mahopac. In addition to his wife of Mahopac, he is survived by his children Anthony and his wife Sandra, James and his wife Joanne, John and Linda Verde and her husband Ralph, eleven grandchildren and 2 great-Grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by infant son Francis and sisters Helen Deluca and Marie Lateria.Frank served in the US Army as a Tech Sergeant in WWII, and played on the Army’s Championship baseball team.Frank and his wife Yolanda were the proprietors of Lombardi’s Dug Out Restaurant in Mahopac for over 53 years until retiring in 2000. Frank was known for his table to table conversation with all of his customers. He was a life member of the Peekskill ELKS Club #744, a member of the Mahopac VFW, the American Legion 1080 and the Italian-American Citizen’s Club. He was a fanatic Yankee fan, avid golfer and enjoyed attending all of his grandchildren’s sporting events.Visiting will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday both days from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at Joseph J. Smith Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday at 11 am at St. John the Evangelist Church, Mahopac with interment to follow at St. Lawrence Cemetery, Brewster.In Lieu of flowers donations may be made in memory of Frank to The American Cancer Society or Hospice Care in Westchester and Putnam.
