Frank Battista, a lifelong resident of Mahopac, NY passed away on Sunday August 14, 2011. He was 91. Born on November 18, 1919 in Casalciprano, Italy the son of Carmine and Carmela Iapaola Battista, immigrating to the US at the age of 9.On July 15, 1947 he married Yolanda Lombardi at St. John the Evangelist Church in Mahopac. In addition to his wife of Mahopac, he is survived by his children Anthony and his wife Sandra, James and his wife Joanne, John and Linda Verde and her husband Ralph, eleven grandchildren and 2 great-Grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by infant son Francis and sisters Helen Deluca and Marie Lateria.Frank served in the US Army as a Tech Sergeant in WWII, and played on the Army’s Championship baseball team.Frank and his wife Yolanda were the proprietors of Lombardi’s Dug Out Restaurant in Mahopac for over 53 years until retiring in 2000. Frank was known for his table to table conversation with all of his customers. He was a life member of the Peekskill ELKS Club #744, a member of the Mahopac VFW, the American Legion 1080 and the Italian-American Citizen’s Club. He was a fanatic Yankee fan, avid golfer and enjoyed attending all of his grandchildren’s sporting events.Visiting will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday both days from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at Joseph J. Smith Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday at 11 am at St. John the Evangelist Church, Mahopac with interment to follow at St. Lawrence Cemetery, Brewster.In Lieu of flowers donations may be made in memory of Frank to The American Cancer Society or Hospice Care in Westchester and Putnam.

My dear father and Frank were golfing partners at Putnam Country Club, in the late '50's -'60's. In those years the Mahopac Country Club was restricted, no Jews or Catholics. As a child in the '40's & '50's we used to go every Saturday to the Movies in Danbury, after we always went to the Dugout for Pizza. I've done a search on Google and can't find the old restaurant. Point of information; Frank discussed the building of the 'Ballroom' with my Dad, who was a NYC builder, it was at a time when Frank was still in the process of ironing out the idea with his Mother and brother. I'm thinking of visiting Mahopac next summer, I loved the Pizza, are any relatives running a similar operation?I understand this is an unusual request, using this site, however back when Frank may G-d rest their souls, first passed I did send a condolence through this site. I came across this notice while doing some research on Mahopac. I wish to express my deepest symphony to all of Frank’s family. Frank and my beloved father were good friends and golf partners at Putnam Country Club, and of course, we had dinner once a week at the Dug Out. I see from the notice that he died of cancer; it’s a horrible disease. My dad, Harry Triefler also died of cancer, and he died less than a month after turning 62. That was in 1968; my beloved mother was also taken by G-d ten years later and by cancer. I can remember as though it were just yesterday, the two of them, Harry and Frank, talking and joking about their game. I know my father loved and respected Frank. The two had so much in common, both hard workers and always striving to do more. Frank often came to my father for advice regarding the expansion of the second floor; my father was a general contractor in NYC. They made a great team, I can only hope that their playing golf together in Heaven, for that where they deserve to be, green fairways. short rough and smooth greens.
