James R. Kempter

James R. Kempter, a lifelong area resident, passed away on Thursday, March 2, 2023 at the age of 55.  He was born in White Plains, NY on June 29, 1967, the son of Edward and Indamora (Murphy) Kempter.

James graduated from Carmel High School in 1984.  After high school he joined the US Air Force and following his service in the mid 1980’s, he was honorably discharged.  He was employed as a pump operator for Herring Sanitation Service in Fishkill, NY.  James was a former member of the Mahopac Falls Volunteer Fire Department where he served in fire and EMS service for over 10 years.  James volunteered at Take Me Home Pet Rescue in Highland, NY, fostering many dogs through the years.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his partner, Dawn Smith; his brothers, Gary and Robert as well as nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his brother, Steven on February 27, 2023.

Family will receive friends on Thursday, March 9 from 3-7 pm at Joseph J. Smith Funeral Home where family remembrances will be shared.  Private cremation services will take place later.
