James William Kennedy, 84, of Mahopac, NY died February 22, 2012. He was born to the late Edward and Margaret Kennedy on August 1, 1927 in the Bronx, NY.James graduated from La Salle Academy in 1945 and received a BA in Business Administration from Fordham University. He married Margaret Gallagher in 1952, and they lived together in the Bronx before relocating to Mahopac in 1971.James served in the US Navy during World War II. He was a New York City Police Officer until he retired in 1978. James was an avid sportsman and also had an interest in drawing, painting and photography. His greatest gift to the world was his family. The morals and values he taught his children through his everyday actions will live on for generations to come. He will be missed by many.James is survived by his loving and faithful wife, Margaret, and their six children: Edward, Kevin, James, Colleen, William and Michael. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren, one great granddaughter and a great grandson on the way.Visiting will be held Thursday February 23, from 7-9 pm and Friday February 24 from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at Joseph J. Smith Funeral Home, 692 US Route 6, Mahopac. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday February 25 at 10 am at St. John The Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 225 East Lake Blvd., Mahopac. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY immediately following the Mass.In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital and Hospice Care of Northern Westchester and Putnam.

Aunt Peggy and family,There are never words to express what someone's passing means to us. You stop and think, "did I just hear dad laugh?; did I just see dad sitting in his chair?; did I hear dad pour his coffee in the kitchen?; is that wind outside blowing because dad made it so? Is that beautiful sunset because my dad loved to watch them?" Those are just a few of the things I thought about when my dad passed 3 years ago. Our dads touch our hearts in so many different ways that we laugh, and cry, at them all. I've taken solace knowing that when my time comes I will see my dad and we will laugh until we cry. That's the only way it should be.Please express my sincerest love to the famly Aunt Peggy and let them know my hug is as big as they need it to be. Aunt Peggy, you ARE the "Rock of Gibraltar". Not only were you strong during this time with Uncle Jim, but I can also remember when you called when my dad was ill and then passed. God has taken a wonderful friend. Jim was always a smiling face and I enjoyed every minute I spent with him. It didn't matter if we were talking sports,politics or trips to Atlantic city Jim was always good for a laugh. What I will always remember most about Jim was his love for family. Jim and Peg always had an open door for everyone. My children had a special place in ere heart for Jim he always took time to ask them how there day was and how things were going. I will miss seeing him sitting on the deck drinking his coffee looking over the lawn contimplating what he was going to do fornthe day.
