Muriel Gazverde, of Mahopac, NY, formerly of Yonkers, and a longtime resident of Cortlandt Manor, NY passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter, Faith Castegner and her son-in-law George on Monday January 31, 2011. She was 97. Born on July 23, 1913 in Jamaica, Queens, she was the daughter of Charles and Beatrice Smith Denby.Muriel was a retired school teacher in the Yonkers and Peekskill City School Districts. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, D.A.R., the Van Cortlandt Historical Society and a lifetime member of AAUW.On June 25, 1940 she married E. Pierre Gazverde at the Chapel of the Redeemer in Yonkers. He died in 1956. In addition to her daughter Faith, she is survived by her daughter Verna Jeanne Rizvi and her husband Tahir of Huntsville, AL, nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brothers Preston and Vernon. Graveside funeral services will be held on Friday at 1 pm at Hillside Cemetery in Cortlandt Manor.In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Hospice Care in Westchester and Putnam, 540 White Plains Rd., Suite 300, Tarrytown, NY 10591.
